Find files shared with you
last updated at: 13 Sep 2026
Drive keeps two views that bring shared files together in one place: Shared with me shows everything other people have given you access to, and Shared by me shows everything you have shared with others.
Find files shared with you
- Open Drive.
- In the sidebar, under Sharing, click Shared with me.
The list shows every file and folder that someone has explicitly shared with you. Each row shows the file name, the owner's avatar, and who else has access.
Click a file to select it and see its details in the panel on the right. Click it again to open it. If a folder appears in the list, opening it takes you into that folder so you can browse its contents.
To preview a file without opening it, right-click and choose Quick preview, or press Space.
Find files you have shared
- Open Drive.
- In the sidebar, under Sharing, click Shared by me.
This shows every file and folder you own that has at least one other person or team with access. From here you can open a file, see who has access, or update the sharing settings.
Change sharing from either view
You can open the Share dialog for any file in either view. Right-click the file (or click the ⋮ button) and choose Share. This opens the same dialog described in Share a file or folder, where you can add or remove people and change their access level.
In Shared with me, you can open, preview and download files, but you cannot rename or duplicate them. Those belong to the file's owner.
When you open a folder that was shared with you for viewing only, Drive shows the same folder without the options you cannot use. There is no New button, and no Rename, Duplicate or Move to trash. You can still open files, preview them, download them, and copy them to a drive of your own.
Remove something from Shared with me
To take a file out of your list, right-click it and choose Move to trash. When the file was shared with you directly, this gives up your own access rather than trashing it. The file stays untouched in the owner's drive, and they can share it with you again later.
A file you reached by opening a folder someone shared works differently. Trashing it there moves the owner's file to the Trash, the same as any other file you are allowed to change.
Copy a link to a shared file
Right-click the file and choose Share → Copy link. The link is copied to your clipboard. Anyone you send it to will still need to sign in to Eigen, and will only be able to open the file if they have been given access.
